What are SLM titanium partial dentures, and what are they made of?

SLM titanium partial dentures are removable partial dentures built on a medical-grade titanium framework produced by Selective Laser Melting (SLM), paired with an acrylic base and denture teeth to restore a partially edentulous patient. ROE produces these in-house through a partnership with 3DRPD. Compared with traditional cast chrome-cobalt (CoCr) partials, the titanium framework is roughly 60% lighter, fully nickel-free, and finished in a natural grayish tone that blends with the gingival tissues.

The framework is a medical-grade Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy (ASTM B348), the same alloy family used in dental implants and FDA-approved for intraoral use. Pure titanium is too flexible for a partial framework, so aluminum and vanadium are alloyed in for strength. Framework design follows the same principles as CoCr, with major connectors typically about 0.4–0.6 mm and some areas as thin as 0.3 mm without compromising strength.

A clinical advantage worth noting: when the metal surface is chemically treated, acrylic bonds more strongly to titanium than to chrome-cobalt, which improves long-term durability and reduces the risk of the acrylic separating from the framework.
