How should patients care for and clean a titanium partial?
Day-to-day cleaning is similar to chrome-cobalt, with one critical exception: avoid cleaners that contain bleach (such as Javex). Titanium does not continuously oxidize; it forms a stable oxide layer almost immediately after manufacturing. When exposed to bleach, the surface does not oxidize further but instead undergoes a chemical reaction that can discolor it and turn it black. (This was identified during early testing when a patient used a bleach-based cleaner on a partial before delivery.)
Key instructions for patients:
- Clean with a regular toothbrush and toothpaste.
- Use standard denture cleaners without bleach.
- Remove the partial during any teeth-whitening procedures that involve bleaching agents.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners that could scratch the surface.
Patients should be told about the bleach restriction explicitly to prevent discoloration.
