How do I troubleshoot common GuidedTEMP™ issues?

Context

Even with careful planning and execution, dental professionals may occasionally encounter challenges during GuidedTEMP™ procedures. Understanding common issues and their solutions helps ensure successful outcomes and builds confidence with the system. This troubleshooting guide addresses frequently encountered scenarios and provides practical solutions.

Answer

Below are common issues encountered with GuidedTEMP™ and recommended solutions to address them effectively.

Issue 1: Contacts Are Not Ideal After Placement

  • Cause: Even with guided placement, minor positional variations can affect contact points
  • Solution: GuidedTEMP™ minimizes but does not eliminate the need for chairside modifications. Make conservative adjustments to maintain restoration integrity while achieving proper contact

Issue 2: Restoration Appears Too Bright

  • Cause: Stellar DC acrylic can sometimes appear brighter than natural teeth
  • Solution: Consider using flowable composite for better shade matching. Remember this is a temporary restoration, and plan for final restoration shade correction if needed

Issue 3: Template Does Not Seat Passively

  • Cause: Tissue interference or implant position variation
  • Solution: Ensure no tissue covers the implant interface. Verify there is no pressure on the implant in any direction. Address any tissue interference before proceeding

Issue 4: Multiple Implant Case Requires Adjustments

  • Cause: Complex multi-unit cases may have slight positional variations
Solutions:
  • Minor adjustments can be made chairside during initial placement
  • Internal adjustments may be needed to ensure passive fit with no metal touching cylinder walls
  • Lab refinement: Remove entire appliance, complete lab work, and return for final placement
  • Void filling: Lab can add material to fill any voids underneath for optimal fit

Issue 5: Surgical Guide Fit Problems

  • Cause: Guide may rock or not seat completely
  • Solution: Always verify guide fit before beginning the procedure. Seat the guide completely and check for any rocking or instability. Make necessary adjustments before proceeding

Issue 6: Need for Flap Elevation

  • Prevention: Inform the lab during the online consultation meeting if flap elevation will be performed
  • Solution: ROE can place a window in the guide to accommodate labial or lingual tissue flapping when requested in advance

Blocking Out Procedure Reminder:

To prevent flowable material from getting underneath and locking components: Install gaskets over temporary cylinders, insert blockout plugs inside the holes, verify complete seal before backfilling, then apply flowable material safely.
