Which patients and sports is ForceField™ recommended for?
ForceField is intended for athletic patients who need reliable dental protection during sport. Dental professionals consider custom-made mouthguards the ideal choice because they offer superior fit and comfort and do not interfere with breathing or speech, unlike stock or boil-and-bite options.
The recommended thickness is customized to the sport, so higher-impact activities can receive a more protective build while still maintaining comfort.
The American Dental Association (ADA) advocates the use of a properly fitting, non-generic mouthguard for a wide range of activities. ROE groups these into contact or collision sports and limited-contact or other sports:
| Contact / Collision Sports | Limited-Contact and Other Sports |
|---|---|
| Basketball | Acrobatics |
| Boxing | Baseball |
| Football | Bicycling |
| Handball | Equestrian events |
| Hockey (ice and field) | Field events |
| Lacrosse | Gymnastics |
| Martial arts | In-line skating |
| Polo | Racquetball |
| Rugby | Shot-putting |
| Soccer | Skateboarding |
| Water sports | Skiing |
| Wrestling | Skydiving |
| Softball | |
| Squash | |
| Surfing and volleyball | |
| Weightlifting | |
| "Extreme sports" |
Patient suitability considerations:
- ForceField is a hard appliance, which makes it appropriate for impact protection rather than for bruxism or TMJ therapy. For those clinical needs, see CLEARguard™, miniComfort™, or CLEARsplint™.
- Because the guard is 30% smaller with improved breathing and speaking, it tends to improve compliance in younger athletes and patients who have abandoned bulkier guards.
- Growing patients may need replacement as dentition changes, so factor growth and orthodontic status into the recommendation.
