When should I use a printed or wax try-in for a traditional denture?

A wax try-in is a built-in, standard step of the traditional-denture process. In ROE's core sequence (bite block, then wax try-in, then reset, then seat), the wax try-in gives both the dentist and the patient an esthetic and functional preview of the set-up before the case is finalized and reset. Combined with the ESP processed-base verification at bite registration, this means the patient has already confirmed the fit before the teeth are finalized, which is the mechanism behind ROE's trouble-free final seat.

Beyond the standard wax try-in, ROE offers an optional printed try-in as an additional verification step. This is not needed for most cases. ROE's published guidance recommends reserving a printed try-in for the more difficult cases that meet specific clinical criteria.

ROE recommends a printed try-in when… Why
Changing the bite class A significant occlusal change benefits from a physical preview before finalizing
The patient has a complicated cross-bite Complex occlusal relationships are harder to predict and warrant verification
Opening the bite over 2 mm Larger VDO changes carry more esthetic and functional risk
The patient is very demanding High-expectation patients benefit from an extra in-mouth approval step

For context on how selective this is: across ROE's digital denture cases, 80%+ do not require a printed try-in, and a patient photo smiling with the bite block or reference denture is typically sufficient for a successful set-up. The same philosophy carries into the traditional line. The printed try-in is a targeted tool for elevated-risk cases rather than a routine step.

The Reverse Reset (related safety net)

If a final denture cannot be satisfactorily equilibrated, or esthetic changes are needed after delivery, ROE offers a Reverse Reset: the doctor returns the denture along with a new bite, and ROE fabricates a new denture. This provides a fallback even when a try-in was not used.
