When should a metal framework partial be selected, and what should I consider?

Selecting the right partial denture type begins with recognizing the clinical situations where a rigid metal framework provides a real advantage. ROE outlines four key clinical indications for using a metal framework, such as the SLM Cobalt Chrome Partial.

Clinical Indication Why a Metal Framework Helps
Lack of occlusal stops Provides rigid support when natural tooth stops are insufficient, helping distribute forces more evenly across the arch
Limited vertical restorative space Can be fabricated with minimal thickness (1.5 to 2mm) and may be indicated when inter-occlusal clearance is limited
Short clinical crowns Offers stronger retention in narrow or shallow areas
Poor oral hygiene Less prone to bacterial accumulation and easier to clean than full acrylic or thermoplastic materials

Beyond these specific indications, metal framework partials offer general clinical advantages worth weighing during treatment planning:

  • Stability. The strong, lightweight design clips securely to the natural teeth and distributes biting forces evenly for a comfortable, stable fit.
  • Hygiene and durability. Metal is hygienic, resistant to discoloration, and easy to keep clean compared with several other materials.
  • Future flexibility. The framework can be adjusted or added to in the future if the patient's dentition changes.

Things to consider before prescribing:

  • The estimated treatment timeline is three patient visits with a 12-day lab turnaround (plus shipping), so plan the seating appointment accordingly using the case delivery calculator.
  • Optional framework and wax try-in appointments add visits but improve predictability, and a wax try-in is recommended for anterior cases or partials replacing four or more teeth.
  • The warranty on the SLM Cobalt Chrome Partial is one year.
  • For patients with known metal allergies or sensitivities, or those prioritizing the lightest possible framework and best biocompatibility, ROE's metal-free options (Acetal, Thermoplastic) or the SLM Titanium Partial may be more appropriate. See the comparison in the next FAQ.
