What should I do if I don't have a IOS for digital dentures and my lab is far away?

There are multiple solutions available for dentists who want to experience digital dentures but whose lab is far away. These solutions include:

  1.  Conventional Impressions with Laboratory Digitization (Most Common)

  2.  Pour Impressions and Ship Casts

  3.  Local Scanning Service

  4.  Establish a Relationship with Closer Laboratory

Below are details on each of the 4 solutions listed above.

Solution 1: Conventional Impressions with Laboratory Digitization (Most Common)

Consideration Detail

Process
  • Take conventional impressions using PVS or polyether (preferred for shipping)
  • Take all required records (jaw relations, photographs, etc.)
  • Package impressions securely with rigid support
  • Ship to ROE via overnight or 2-day service (generate a UPS shipping label on demand)
  • Laboratory scans impressions upon receipt with benchtop scanner
  • Laboratory proceeds with digital design and fabrication

Advantages
  • No equipment investment required
  • Use familiar impression techniques
  • ROE expertise in scanning ensures quality
  • Most reliable method for distance laboratory relationships

Best Practices
  • Use dimensionally stable materials (PVS strongly preferred)
  • Package with rigid support (boxes with foam inserts)
  • Never fold or distort impressions during packaging
  • Include bite registration and photos in the same package
  • Request shipping tracking to confirm delivery
  • Ask ROE to confirm a successful scan before proceeding

Solution 2: Pour Impressions and Ship Casts

Consideration Detail

Process
  • Take impressions using any appropriate material (alginate is acceptable)
  • Pour impressions in dental stone immediately in your office
  • Allow adequate setting time (minimum 45 minutes)
  • Separate casts carefully after the completely set
  • Ship stone casts to ROE (more durable than impressions)
  • ROEscans casts with benchtop scanner

Advantages
  • Alginate becomes an acceptable option (cost savings)
  • Casts more durable during shipping than impressions
  • Can verify cast quality before shipping
  • Casts are easier to package without a distortion risk

Disadvantages
  • Requires investment and space for pouring equipment in office
  • Additional office time for pouring and cast preparation
  • Casts heavier (typically higher shipping cost - not if you use ROE's UPS shipping option)
  • Slight dimensional change possible during pouring process

Solution 3: Local Scanning Service

Consideration Detail

Options
  • Some independent scanning services accept impressions by mail
  • Local dental laboratories may offer a scanning-only service
  • Scan service returns STL files to you digitally
  • You can send STL files to your preferred fabrication laboratory
  • Separates scanning from fabrication allowing the use of distant lab

Finding Scanning Services
  • Ask local laboratories if they offer scanning-only service
  • Search for dental scanning services online
  • Check with dental schools (may offer scanning as a service)
  • Some 3D printing businesses offer dental scanning

Solution 4: Invest in a Scanner for In-House Digitization

Equipment Options Details

Benchtop Scanner ($3,000-$20,000)
  • Scans impressions, casts, and physical objects
  • One-time capital investment
  • No per-scan cost after purchase
  • Independence from ROE's scanning schedule
  • Can offer scanning services to other dentists (revenue opportunity)

Intraoral Scanner ($15,000-$40,000)
  • Can scan physical impressions and casts (not just intraoral)
  • Higher initial investment
  • Greater versatility for other procedures
  • Eliminates the need for impression material

Decision Factors
  • Case volume (higher volume justifies investment sooner)
  • Desire for workflow control and independence
  • Available capital for equipment purchase
  • Physical space in the office for equipment
  • Staff training willingness and capability

Communication Technology Solutions:

Realistic Expectations:

  • 3-5 days is typical for impression scanning and preview delivery
  • Factor shipping time into treatment planning (add 2-3 days each direction)
  • Plan patient appointments around realistic turnaround times
  • Emergency or rush cases require different workflow planning
