What is the miniComfort, and how does it work?
The miniComfort is a partial-coverage lower guard, made by ROE in partnership with Dr. John Kline. It is 100% soft inside and out, biocompatible, and vacuum-formed ("suck-down" process) from the patient's records. It carries two discluding elements that line up with the maxillary canines (cuspids). Because it does not cover the whole arch, it is small and comfortable, and it is undetectable enough to wear during the day.
It works on the longstanding principle of canine disclusion. The maxillary canines have long been considered the cornerstone of the dentition because their root shape suits heavy forces. When the patient closes and the lower teeth touch the discluding elements at the canines, the contact provides biofeedback that reminds the patient to relax and stay open, day or night. Key to its design:
- No posterior contact, so it does not incite the muscles of closure into hyperactivity.
- No hard acrylic interface for opposing teeth to grind or brace against, so there is no "sweet spot" for the muscles to settle into.
- Allows natural jaw movement similar to chewing food or gum, so the muscles do not fall into a memorized habitual pattern.
Ideally the posterior occlusion is ever so slightly open in maximum intercuspation, and the discluding elements contact the lower teeth at about the same time (though simultaneous contact is not imperative).
