What is the clinical workflow for an Ivotion Digital Denture?
The core in-lab process for Ivotion is straightforward: bite block, then optional printed try-in, then seat the final denture. The exact chairside path depends on the patient's starting point. ROE publishes several downloadable workflows that apply to Ivotion, summarized below.
A) Edentulous Patient, Digital Workflow (no existing denture to reference)
- Scan the tissue with your IOS and send the tissue scan file to ROE to order a custom bite block. Capture all necessary anatomy, including fully extended peripheral borders, retromolar pads, tuberosities, hamular notches, and fovea palatinae.
- Try in the bite block. Confirm occlusion, esthetics, and phonetics. Gently heat and contour the wax rim to the arch form, adjust height for lip support and occlusal plane, and refine the surface.
- Apply adhesive to the intaglio surface of the bite block, mix light-body impression material, inject onto the bite block surface, seat in the mouth, have the patient perform functional movements, then remove and evaluate.
- Take photos with both bite blocks seated and email to the lab: full-face full-smile, full-face exaggerated smile, and optional full-face profile.
- Capture a 360 degree extraoral IOS scan of each bite block and an IOS scan of the bite, verifying no holes or stitching errors.
- Upload files and complete the Rx. Submit IOS scans via the IOS portal or export STLs to the ROE portal, or send physical models and records.
- Optional printed try-in (see the next article for when this is recommended).
- Seat the new denture.
B) Patient with Reference (Existing) Denture (duplicating or improving an existing prosthesis)
- Take standing patient photos (full smile, exaggerated smile, optional profile).
- If needed, perform a hard reline/wash of the existing denture with PVS for a closer fit, trimming excess around the flanges, facial, and buccal.
- To restore teeth and VDO, capture the opposing and bite with the denture seated (IOS scan of denture teeth, opposing, and bite, or a physical impression and bite).
- Capture a 360 degree extraoral scan of the denture by CBCT (denture on foam or cotton rolls, never on a hard radiopaque surface) or IOS (verify no holes or stitching errors).
- Upload files and complete the Rx, annotating any changes such as shade or wear.
- Seat the new denture.
C) Immediate Denture Patient (teeth planned for extraction)
- Take standing patient photos (full smile, exaggerated smile, optional profile).
- Capture upper and lower impressions and bite (IOS or physical).
- Send records to ROE and complete the Rx.
- Seat the new denture after the teeth are extracted.
- If the denture does not seat, either perform a post-healing reline or remake using the "Patient with Reference Denture" protocol.
Required records summary
| Record | Notes |
|---|---|
| Impressions | Traditional or digital; full upper and lower |
| Bite registration | Using base plate and wax rim |
| Opposing | Captured with prosthesis seated when restoring VDO |
| Patient photographs | Full-face full-smile, exaggerated smile, optional profile (patient standing) |
| Reline wash impression | Optional, taken inside the baseplate for a closer tissue fit |
Prerequisite for CBCT scanning
