What is the Carrier Guide and what does it do?
The Carrier Guide clicks into the Fixation Base and is the platform for the prosthesis. Two transparent plastic pegs deliver the Provisional Prosthesis and RAPID Appliance in their pre-planned position, and it stays in the mouth through the entire conversion. It performs four functions:
- Verifies bone reduction
- Seats/guides the abutments (indicates rotation and position of angled MUAs)
- Seats the prosthesis / RAPID Appliance
- Preserves the tissue gap — its thickness (~3 mm) simulates the patient's tissue thickness
It also acts as a soft-tissue spacer and verifies that the driver is going in the right direction on angled implants. Note the black square at angled sites, which is where the driver passes through to deliver the abutment screw on the same trajectory as the implant.
Green gaskets are required. They block out the pick-up material so it doesn't lock in the prosthetic. Acceptable substitutes that remove easily include light body, rubber-dam glove material, or wax.
Tip: You can seat the prosthetic or RAPID early to check occlusion. This is a good way to confirm everything is stacking correctly and to anticipate adjustments.
