What is an SLM Cobalt Chrome Partial Denture?

An SLM Cobalt Chrome (CoCr) partial denture is a traditional removable partial denture that combines a rigid metal framework with an acrylic base and denture teeth to restore function and esthetics for partially edentulous patients. The framework clips securely to the patient's remaining natural teeth using clasps, distributing biting forces across the arch. What distinguishes ROE's version from a conventional partial is the manufacturing method: the cobalt chrome framework is built using Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technology rather than traditional metal casting.

SLM is an additive manufacturing process in which fine metal powder is precisely melted, layer by layer, by a high-power laser that follows a digital framework design. Instead of pouring molten metal into a mold (casting), the framework is grown from the powder bed one thin layer at a time. This layer-by-layer construction produces a homogeneous, single-phase microstructure, which differs from the structure created by conventional cast alloys and contributes to the framework's strength and fatigue resistance.

Cobalt chrome has long been regarded as a standard material for partial denture frameworks. ROE attributes this to three core material properties:

Cobalt Chrome Property Why It Matters Clinically
Exceptional strength-to-weight ratio Allows thin, rigid frameworks that withstand masticatory forces without excessive bulk
Superior biocompatibility Well tolerated intraorally for long-term wear
Proven clinical performance Decades of documented use in removable partial dentures

ROE produces these frameworks in-house rather than outsourcing or relying on traditional casting, and the lab describes itself as a national leader in SLM printing technology. The practical takeaway for the clinician is that this is a familiar, time-tested restoration produced with modern digital precision. Practitioners can keep the clinical protocols they have used for decades while benefiting from improved framework fit, consistency, and reproducibility.
