What is an All-Acrylic Partial (Flipper) and when should I prescribe one?

An All-Acrylic Partial, commonly called a "flipper," is a cost-effective, lightweight interim appliance designed for immediate aesthetic restoration. It typically replaces one to three anterior teeth and is fabricated from acrylic with denture teeth, using clasps (wrought wire or esthetic) for retention.

Flippers are mucosa-supported, meaning they rest on and draw their primary support from the soft tissue rather than from a rigid metal framework. Because they are simple to fabricate, they can be produced rapidly, adjusted easily chairside, and offered at the most accessible price point of any partial denture option.

This appliance is best suited for transitional and temporary scenarios, including:

  • Partial tooth replacement for one to three missing teeth
  • A temporary space maintainer while a more permanent solution (such as an implant, fixed bridge, or metal-framework partial) is being planned or fabricated
  • Immediate aesthetic restoration following an extraction, so the patient is never without front teeth
  • Maintaining patient confidence and social comfort during healing or treatment planning

Flippers are not intended for long-term use or heavy function. They serve as invaluable tools for preserving a patient's quality of life during transitional treatment phases. For patients needing a durable, long-term partial, ROE offers metal-framework and thermoplastic options covered in the questions below.
