What is a tissue-supported surgical guide, and when should I use one?

A tissue-supported surgical guide is a guided-surgery template that derives its primary support and retention from the intraoral soft tissues and mucosa. It is most commonly fabricated based on a patient's existing removable prosthesis, which provides familiar patient comfort and preserves established tissue relationships.

This guide type is designed primarily for edentulous cases and, in some situations, partially edentulous cases. Because the design is built from a proven, patient-adapted appliance, it lets you leverage a denture the patient already tolerates well while planning implant placement digitally.

Ideal use cases at a glance:

Factor Tissue-Supported Guide
Best for Edentulous cases where the guide is based on a dual-scan
Number of sites Any number
Support source Intraoral soft tissue and mucosa
Typical basis Existing or new full denture
Key advantage Uses proven prosthetic design and patient-adapted appliance

A primary advantage ROE highlights is the reduced risk of damage to vital anatomy through precise surgical planning. When a patient presents with good-quality mucosa, these guides offer an effective way to reduce the number of surgical steps required for implant placement.

If your case calls for a different support strategy, ROE also offers tooth-supported, bone-supported, CombiGuide, and CHROME GuidedSMILE options. See FAQ 6 for a full comparison. To discuss a specific case, request pricing or send a case.
