What is a stump shade and why is it needed?

A stump shade documents the color of the prepared tooth structure underneath a crown. Recording both the current and any previous stump shades helps our technicians match the final restoration to the surrounding natural teeth, ensuring the most aesthetic and natural-looking result.

Stump shade notation typically follows formats such as ND1, ND2, and so forth, with ND1 being the lightest. Other common formats include OM1, 4L 1.5, and 5M2. Your office may use different notation systems, and our team is familiar with various shade guide formats.

Providing stump shade information is particularly critical for E-Max crowns and other highly translucent restorations, as the underlying tooth color can significantly affect the final appearance.
