What are the preparation requirements for an e.max veneer, and why do they matter?

Understanding the 0.3 mm figure versus the 0.5 to 0.7 mm figure

These two numbers appear in different places and describe different things. Reading them correctly avoids a common prep error.

  • 0.3 mm is the minimum thickness the material itself supports. It describes what lithium disilicate is capable of surviving in thin section.
  • 0.5 to 0.7 mm is ROE's prescribed facial reduction for this specific layered product. The layered build needs that space to accommodate a core plus hand-applied porcelain and still deliver the esthetics the product is rated for.

Prep to the 0.5 to 0.7 mm specification unless you have discussed a thinner design with an ROE technician in advance for a particular case.

Why the margin placement guidance says "at or slightly subgingival"

Placing the margin at or just below the free gingival margin conceals the junction between ceramic and tooth. Going deeply subgingival creates two problems: it complicates impression capture and moisture control, and it makes complete cement cleanup significantly harder. Retained subgingival cement on an anterior esthetic unit is both an esthetic and a periodontal liability.

Stay in enamel wherever you can

The single most influential factor in long-term veneer survival is the quality of the bonding substrate. Enamel bonds are more predictable and more durable than dentin bonds. A conservative prep that stays within enamel is the goal, and it is also the reason the facial reduction specification is deliberately modest.

Common preparation problems and their consequences
