What are the limitations, contraindications, and longevity considerations for IPS e.max® Layered?
The defining limitation is scope
ROE offers IPS e.max Layered for the anterior crown application only, not for posterior crowns, bridges, or high-load situations.
Why
The porcelain layer that delivers the esthetics is, by nature, more susceptible to chipping or wear than a monolithic surface, and the ~400 MPa core is well below the zirconia options. ROE's layered-vs-monolithic guidance summarizes it directly: layered crowns are best when esthetics is the top priority but may not suit teeth subjected to excessive wear; monolithic crowns are preferred where there are significant chewing forces, a history of damaging restorations, or parafunctional habits.
The patient to screen carefully: the bruxer or clencher
If meaningful parafunction is present, either redirect to a monolithic material or address the parafunction (e.g., a nightguard) as part of the plan, and document the conversation.
Considerations at a glance
| Consideration | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Indicated application | Anterior single crown |
| Not indicated for | Posterior crowns, bridges, high-load or heavy-wear cases |
| Parafunction (bruxism/clenching) | Screen for it; consider a monolithic material and/or occlusal guard |
| Esthetic dependency on reduction | Adequate, even reduction is required for color/translucency and porcelain durability |
| Maintenance | Re-polish any adjusted surface; protect against parafunctional load |
| Warranty | 2 years |
Longevity is largely in your hands
The levers you control are reduction adequacy, occlusal management, marginal seal, and cement control. A layered anterior crown that is properly reduced, seated to a verified complete margin, cemented with minimal well-removed cement, and protected from parafunctional overload is a reliable esthetic restoration. ROE backs the product with a 2-year warranty; see ROE's Warranty Statement for full terms.
