Troubleshooting: what should I do if an EZneer case does not go as planned?

Most EZneer complications trace back to one of four causes: a glass-ceramic bonding protocol applied to zirconia, insufficient or uneven preparation, inadequate shade documentation, or contamination during seating.

Common issues and corrective actions

Issue Likely cause What to do
Veneer debonded Hydrofluoric or phosphoric acid was used, the MDP primer was skipped, the surface was contaminated, or isolation was inadequate Re-treat the inner surface, confirm your primer contains MDP, rebond with a light cure resin adhesive. Re-cementation may be coded D2910
Restoration darkened after cementation A self-cure or dual-cure adhesive was used instead of the specified light cure resin Follow the light cure resin-based adhesive instruction, which is specified to prevent darkening
Substrate color still visible Preshaded veneer at minimum thickness over a dark or uneven prep Move to the multilayered option in the 0.5 to 0.8 mm range and discuss the substrate with ROE before finalizing the prep
Shade does not match adjacent teeth Shade recorded in poor lighting, no shade tab photo, or dehydrated teeth at the time of recording Re-record shade with VITA 3D-Master and a shade tab photograph, or use the Shade-In-Lab Service
Incisal chipping or fracture Incisal reduction outside the 0.75 to 1.5 mm range, or a thin unsupported edge instead of a butt joint Confirm a 90-degree butt joint, verify occlusion and excursive contacts. Repair may be coded D2983
Veneer will not seat fully Residual cement or temporary material on the prep, tight interproximal, or a margin that is not fully captured Clean the prep thoroughly, confirm the prep extends halfway through the contacts, and verify the 0.2 mm chamfer was captured in the impression
Open or tight contacts Interproximal extension did not reach the specified depth, or impression distortion Re-verify the prep against ROE's specifications and resend records if the margin or contact area is unreadable
Fit issues across multiple units Impression distortion, scan stitching error, or a bite registration that does not reproduce Rescan or re-impress. Verify the opposing arch and bite registration were both submitted

When to escalate

Preventing problems on the next case

  1. Document shade before the teeth dehydrate, and always include a shade tab photograph.
  2. Flag masking cases in the Rx so the technician selects the right shading approach up front.
  3. Verify your primer contains MDP and that your adhesive is light cure, before the seating appointment.
  4. Record your standing preferences on the Doctor Lab Preferences form.
  5. Use the Case Delivery Calculator so the seating appointment is never scheduled ahead of delivery.
