Should I choose e.max or zirconia (EZneer) veneers for my patient?
The short version
Both materials produce beautiful results. The decision comes down to two questions about your specific patient:
- How hard is this patient on their teeth?
- What is the underlying tooth going to look like after you prep it?

Choose e.max when:
- The patient shows lighter wear on their existing dentition
- The adjacent teeth have significant characterization, with a distinct gingival third, middle third, and incisal third gradient that you need to match
- There is no dark staining under the planned prep
- There are no endodontically treated or darkened teeth in the treatment zone
- There are no old restorations that have leached and discolored the tooth
- Maximum esthetics is the patient's stated priority
Choose EZneer zirconia when:
- The patient is tougher on their teeth and needs something hardier
- The teeth show less natural characterization and a more uniform appearance is appropriate
- There is staining beneath the prep site, an old leaching restoration, or the tooth is darker for any reason
- You are dealing with fluorosis or tetracycline staining, where zirconia's color-shielding handles what a translucent material cannot
- You need maximum conservation of tooth structure, since the prep specification is thinner
The critical bonding difference
These two materials are not interchangeable at the chair. The protocols are actively incompatible:
- e.max requires 5% hydrofluoric acid on the fitting surface, followed by Monobond Plus
- EZneer zirconia must not be treated with any phosphoric or hydrofluoric acid. It requires an MDP-containing ceramic primer and a light-cure resin-based adhesive
Applying the e.max protocol to a zirconia veneer will compromise the restoration. Confirm the material before you open an etchant.
When you are genuinely unsure
