How should patients clean and care for the miniComfort?
Care is simple, but one rule is critical: never expose the miniComfort to hot water, which can damage and distort it.
| Do | Do not |
|---|---|
| Wear over clean teeth | Never place it in hot water |
| Upon awakening, rinse with cool water, massage with antibacterial hand soap in and around the appliance, let stand two to three minutes, rinse again, and dry with a paper towel | Never clean it in a dishwasher |
| Store dry in the open case whenever possible | Never wear it while eating or drinking |
| Keep it out of reach of pets | Never use hot water when cleaning |
| Stop wearing and call the dentist if it causes pain or discomfort | Do not rely on an over-the-counter boil-and-bite guard, which is no substitute and can irreversibly damage the bite |
Important safety note: if the appliance becomes distorted so that it can be removed easily without using the hands, stop wearing it immediately and make an appointment. The miniComfort is fully biocompatible (the material is even used to coat oral medications), so an uneventful swallow poses no great danger, unlike the acrylic of conventional guards, which is never meant to be ingested.
