How should an IPS e.max® Layered crown be cemented, and how do I avoid cementation-related failures?

Cement choice

IPS e.max Layered can be delivered with either self-adhesive or conventional cement. ROE's seating instruction is to clean the inside of the crown with a cleaning solution before applying cement.

The bigger issue is cement quantity, not brand

ROE's clinical guidance highlights that excess cement is a routine, avoidable problem: the cited literature indicates clinicians often use far more cement than necessary, with most of it extruding beyond the margins. On an anterior esthetic unit, retained subgingival cement is both an esthetic and a periodontal liability (gingival inflammation and recession around the very tooth you were trying to perfect).

The correct technique

  • Apply only a thin film of cement to the internal walls, kept away from the margins, just enough for retention.
  • Seat under finger pressure, have the patient bite down, then place a wood stick across the occlusion to hold position while the cement sets.
  • Remove excess in the rubbery stage using floss and scalers; clean subgingivally and around every margin. Rubbery-stage removal is far cleaner than chiseling fully set cement later.

Finishing

Re-check and adjust proximal contacts, emergence profile, and occlusal contacts in centric and excursive movements with articulating paper. Then polish every adjusted surface thoroughly; this is not cosmetic. Rough, unpolished surfaces can abrade adjacent and opposing natural teeth and create spacing, so any surface you touch with a bur must be re-polished smooth before the patient leaves.
