How long does a miniComfort last, and what about patients who wear through it quickly?
Most patients use one appliance for one to three years before it needs replacing, and on average about every three years. Because it is soft and comfortable by design, it is a wear item, like shoes, tires, or contact lenses, and it will not last indefinitely. Bruxism is a highly destructive force, so some patients wear through faster.
A small number of patients with a severe waking habit may destroy a guard in one to two months by chewing or grinding on it while awake. For these patients:
- Set expectations before delivery. Warn at the time of the first appliance that some patients wear through prematurely, so any later remake charge reads as a result of the habit rather than a provider's excuse.
- Schedule a brief two-week follow-up to check for heavy premature wear-through.
- Advise wearing it only when sleeping, and never chewing or grinding on it while awake (even in bed).
- Refer for support. Consistent heavy bruxism can point to underlying stress and anxiety; refer to a physical therapist for exercises, relaxation, and awareness training, and consider non-dental medical guidance.
Because a reorder usually needs no new impression, a provider may charge a nominal replacement fee, and a patient who cannot produce their appliance at a recare visit may not qualify for the practice's loyalty or replenishment program.
