How do I prepare a denture for the dual scan protocol within GuidedSMILE Revisions?

The dual scan is how the lab aligns the denture to the patient's anatomy. It only works if the denture fits and the markers are placed correctly.

Step 1: Verify the denture fits

Before anything else, confirm no rock and proper occlusion. A denture that moves during the scan invalidates the entire alignment.

Situation Required action
Patient has a good denture Proceed to marker placement
Patient has a poor denture Fabricate a new denture, perform a hard reline, or place blue mousse inside the denture to stabilize it
Any denture with metal mesh, reinforcement, or a bar Do not use the denture. Order a scan appliance and prepare that instead

Soft relines are NOT acceptable. They compress during the scan and destroy the accuracy of the alignment.

Step 2: Place exactly six markers

Prepare the denture or scan appliance by placing 6 radiopaque scan markers (available at suremark.com) or 6 gutta percha points randomly in the pink area of the labial and buccal flanges.

Requirement Correct Incorrect
Marker count Exactly 6 Fewer or more
Placement pattern Random distribution Aligned, symmetrical, or grouped placement
Location Pink area of the labial and buccal flanges On the teeth or in the intaglio
Marker type Radiopaque scan markers or gutta percha points Any non-radiopaque material
Denture stability Good-fitting denture, hard reline, or blue mousse Soft reline
Support for the solo scan Foam Plastic

Random placement matters because the lab uses the marker constellation to superimpose the two scans. A symmetrical or clustered pattern gives the alignment software ambiguous reference points.

Step 3: Capture the two CBCT scans

  1. CBCT scan the denture in the mouth, in occlusion, not separated.
  2. CBCT scan the denture alone, resting on foam, not plastic.

Verify on the first scan that the denture is fully seated with no black voids before the patient leaves.
