How do I handle advanced or unstable-bite records situations?
Some clinical "red flags" require extra records or a confirmed bite before the case can move forward. When in doubt, upload everything on the checklist and let the ROE team evaluate.
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Existing metal partial denture in the CHROME arch | Metal frames cause CBCT scatter and must be removed for the scan. If the partial is needed to establish the bite, capture it in an impression. Otherwise, send master casts, opposing, and bite. |
| Free-end case with an unstable bite | The bite must first be established with bite blocks and set-ups. Once the case can be articulated, CHROME GuidedSMILE can proceed. |
| Opening the bite more than 2–3 mm | The lab can open up to 3 mm without a returned open-bite verification record. Beyond 3 mm must be established clinically with a CR bite or splint therapy — ROE can assist with the JC Try-In repositioning device. |
Diagnostic tip — does the bite need opening? If the distance between the gingival zeniths of #9 and #24 is less than 17 mm (Shimbashi rule), or the inter-vestibular (fold-to-fold) measurement is less than 35 mm, opening may be required. Other red flags include a collapsed/C-shaped or inverted smile profile, worn dentition, partial edentulism with no positive centric stops, prominent overbite/underbite (Class II/III — include a profile photo with the ear visible), and gummy smile/maxillary excess hyperplasia. For unstable bites, ROE can provide a JC Try-In (a hard, monochromatic, flipper-like appliance) to confirm bite and VDO before going to final.
