How do I adjust the flexible clasps chairside at seating?
One advantage of metal-free thermoplastic partials is that the resin clasps can be modified chairside using gentle heat. The flexible resin clasps have a lower elastic modulus than metal, which allows controlled reshaping.
At seating, adjustments should be none to minimal. If a clasp fit needs modification, follow ROE's protocol:
| Situation | Action |
|---|---|
| Clasp fits too tightly | Use a heat gun or torch to warm the plastic to approximately 212°F / 100°C, then bend the clasp outwards and cool it in cold water |
| Clasp is too loose | Use the same heating procedure, but bend the clasp inwards, then cool in cold water |
After adjusting clasps, use pressure indicating paste to determine pressure areas, make adjustments as necessary, and then finish and polish before seating the final partial denture.
Because the material is flexible, it tolerates this kind of chairside modification well, and the appliance returns to a stable shape once cooled.
