How do I adjust the fit and retention of a flipper at seating?

At the seating appointment, adjustments should be none to minimal if records were captured accurately. ROE recommends the following chairside approach:

  1. Seat the appliance and evaluate the fit against the tissue.
  2. Apply pressure indicating paste to the intaglio (tissue) surface and re-seat to identify any localized pressure or sore spots.
  3. Relieve pressure areas as indicated, then finish and polish the adjusted surfaces.
  4. Confirm comfort, occlusion, and esthetics before final delivery.

It is important to set expectations around retention. A flipper relies primarily on tissue adaptation and its clasps (wrought wire or esthetic) rather than a rigid metal framework, so its retention is limited compared to other partial designs. Because the appliance is all-acrylic, it can also be easily relined, modified, or repaired chairside or in-lab during the transitional period.

If a patient needs significantly greater stability or retention, this is usually a signal that a metal-framework or thermoplastic partial would serve them better long term. See the comparison question below for alternatives.
